We believe children learn best through play and investigation in a relaxed environment.
We instil in our children compassion and tolerance towards others.
We produce well-balanced, happy pupils with a positive self-image and ability to reason.
To provide excellent education while developing
the whole child, in a caring and safe environment.
Chibby (Margaret) Slyper had a vision:
“to provide excellent education while developing the whole child, in a caring and safe environment.”
And so, Rustenburg Early Learning Centre was born.
Our doors opened in August 1997 and very soon we established an excellent reputation.
The school grew rapidly from one group, to accommodating four groups.
In 2010, Alison Groom took over the school.
Alison shared Chibby’s vision and the school grew further to five groups running.
In April 2016, Colleen Purdon took over as principal. Alison Groom immigrated to Australia in 2017, leaving the school in the competent hands of the dedicated staff and new owners, Joanne Walsh and Zakkiyah Sujee.
Staff and parents are proud of the service the school offers the community.
In 2018 we achieved a Silver Eco-School award from WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa).
Our Dedicated Teachers
Principal, Grade R Teacher
I grew up on the West Rand and studied teaching at the Johannesburg College of Education. I specialised in the foundation phase and also did Remedial teaching as further study. I have taught for over 40 years and remain as passionate about children and education as when I first started. What keeps me going is the light in the children’s eyes in front of me when they achieve a goal. I continually take great delight in each child’s success and cherish the profound and positive effect that I can make on each child that passes through my class. There is no greater reward than a young adult walking through the school gate and saying “Do you remember me Mam?” and then continue to tell me about what they have achieved. Every day is different, there is never a dull moment! It is a privilege to be trusted with these special little people that walk through our gate each day.
Grade RR Teacher, co-owner
Born and bred on a farm in Vanderbylpark, I moved to Rustenburg in December 2005. I obtained my degree in education from Unisa and have taught Gr 1 and 2 previously. I also co-ran a successful UCMAS franchise for four years before starting at RELC in 2011. I started with the 2 turning 3 year olds for two years and then moved to 4 turning 5 year old for three consecutive years. I’m presently teaching Grade R. I am blessed to be able to earn a living doing something that brings me great joy. I love being with these little people every single day. I take delight in hearing them squeal in wonder at the sight of a new experiment, watching the curiosity pique in their eyes when they discover something or when they dance in glee as they overcome their little hurdles. They are my happy place, they are my children.

Originally from Johannesburg, I moved to Rustenburg 6 years ago. I have a degree in Hospitality Management and I bake cakes and cupcakes as a hobby. I have my PGCE in early childhood development and foundation phase education and have been teaching for the past 8 years. I chose early childhood education because I believe in building a strong foundation for life-long learning. Developing young curious minds is my passion. I strive to motivate, inspire, encourage and support children by providing a safe, secure, loving and nurturing environment in which children can discover themselves, take risks and test their limits. Preschool education happens during the most formative age in which children gather information about themselves and the world around them. The way they do this is through PLAY! I have a strong belief in sensory play. You will often find my children engaging in all sorts of messy play, barefoot and having fun.
Grade RRR Teacher
I was born and bred in Rustenburg. From a young age I have been passionate about working with children. I worked in Australia as an au pair for a lovely family who had a set of twins. That just further cemented my desire to work with children so I decided to start studying education. I’m currently busy with my B.Ed. foundation phase degree which I am completing through Unisa. Each day is a blessing, spending time with my children: watching them grow, play, laugh and have fun. Just to be able to get up each morning and follow my passion puts a smile on my face. I love working at Rustenburg Early Learning Centre. I started out as an assistant in the Duckling class (4 year old) and went on to teach the Robin class (3 year old) for 3 years. I am currently teaching the Duckling class.
Grade RRRR Teacher
Hailing from Krugersdorp, I moved around a few times before settling down in Rustenburg. I come from a long line of teachers in my family and actually tried to avoid the teaching profession but in the end I knew that’s where my heart belonged. I studied “Kinder Kinetica” (early childhood development and kinetic movement) and began to au pair when the realisation dawned on me that teaching is what I wanted to do. I’m currently studying my B.Ed through Unisa. I was also a Playball coach for 4 years, where I had the opportunity of working at many different schools. I am currently teaching the Robin Class (2-3 year olds) at Rustenburg Early Learning Centre. I absolutely just love working with children and derive such satisfaction in watching them grow and develop and I take joy from watching the smiles on their faces as they learn, grow through my tutelage.
